Either I had an amnesiac moment, or I'm a glutton for punishment. I just changed the transmission on the race car w/o pulling the engine and transmission as a unit. Every time I do this I swear I'll never do it again. Other than having to remove the hood and radiator the amount of work is about the same, but pulling the engine/transmission is easier. It seems like it shouldn't be that difficult but reaching all of the top bolts isn't easy at all. It doesn't help that a sadistic engineer at BWM chose to use three sizes of bolts. Not really much of a problem when putting the bolts back in as you can match them up first, but a royal pain when working blind by feel taking them out.

I'm about six hours into it and all that left is to bolt the drive shaft back up. It rained late this evening and the humidity is atrocious. My glasses keep fogging up, which doesn't help at all.

I feel ya. I was at pick and pull trying to get a tranny out. It was 103 and I said f it. I told myself I'd go back later this week since its supposed to be only 95. What makes it a bit easier is the heads off and you can see the top bolts of the tranny.

remove those bulky heavy hood joints, and put four hood pins sticking up and gut the support of the hood, make it a sheet of thin metal safety clipped down,

lol, totaal hood removal inn 7 seconds!

Yes, what a beast. I like getting at those top three bolts with all of my extensions hooked together and then go at it from behind the trans. This works best with a buddy to guide you onto the bolts.
