    Testing Transmission

So I pulled out a 5-speed transmission today from the junkyard and cant tell if it works or not. I can spin it but not shift into any gears. Could it be seized or jammed? Please help :[

Doesn't the clutch need to be in for the gears to operate?

I have no clue im converting my auto to a manual and I really don't know anything about transmissions. that makes sense though. I pulled out the transmission and the T/O bearing was completely torn apart.

It requires a good bit of force, but you should be able to move the selector into each of the gears. The easiest way is to mount the shifter to the transmission.

About all you can say about a transmission when it is out of the car is the all of the gears can be selected and that there are not any obvious problems. You won't know if the shifter forks, syncros, or bearings are bad until the transmission is installed and the car can be driven.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

What the oil from the tranny looks like can be a good indication. If it us clean and clear, it is likely fine. If it has metal shavings our chunks in it, consider it garbage.

the tranny was locked up. i drained the fluid and it was all clean. i threw that thing away and got another one that actually works... 10 hours later. anyone know of short shift kits that are reasonably cheap along with solid motor and tranny mounts?

condor speed shop mounts are pretty cheap and good quality, ebay ssk works alright, or get a z3 lever if you want something nicer.
