Shifting Problems (I need some input)

I was traveling at about 80mph in 5th gear, on the freeeway, I was exiting an off-ramp and put it in neutral. I coasted to a stop, light turned green, put it in 1st and the shifting got extremely loose. It was very, for lack of better words, awkward and inaccurate shifting into gears.

I pulled over with the engine still on and began to go through all the gears to make sure they would still shift, which they did, but 2nd would grind on occasion (while driving)

I eventually got home, shifting diligently and driving slow. But I have no idea what's wrong, any ideas? This all happened as a result of driving fast on the freeway, in 5th gear. Also, I noticed that while in 5th gear the shifter would fluctuate back and forth as I take my foot off the gas and then start to accelerate again.

I have new bushings and a z4 shifter installed.

Get under the car and check out the shifter. Something is amiss with it.

I'll do that, any other ideas? Anything specific I should look for?

I used a jack and stand to look under the car, I couldn't see anything unconnected or out of place. I also noticed that the shifter has a lot of play going forward and back while being in neutral (engine off), way too much play.

Same problem!! No answer as of.......
But my shifter is not loose, and clutch feels the same!
But after a 20min+ drive on highway, starts again popping out 5th, and grinding all other gears!

Damn. Yeah, high speeds in 5th gear fucks everything up.

Check transmission fluid and levels? I had 1 day of weird shifting then BANG 2 and 4 were toast followed by the rest soon after. No fluid in the case.

Anyone have an idea of how much that would cost, just for a simple level check?

Do these cars not have transmission dipsticks?

The automatics do, but not manual transmissions. (I think that's every car)

Pretty easy to do yourself. The fill/check plug is on the side. Take that off and it should be flush with the bottom of the threads

I think I'll replace the tranny and diff fluids(diff is also making a weird noise when turning right) with redline stuff, replace the clutch slave and master cylinder...

And forget about the transmission stuff for awhile! ;)
