    Selector Rod Coupling Washer

I removed the selector rod coupling to replace the selector rod seal on my transmission and there doesn't appear to be a washer inside or if it is it is too deteriorated to be recognized.

I didn't plan ahead for this aspect of the repair and don't have a new washer on hand. I need to be able to be on the road by Sunday so I would prefer to not be delayed by ordering parts. If I were to reinstall the coupling without the washer would I be risking serious problems?

In addition, does this coupler need to be lubricated/greased? It was extremely oily when I removed it but the transmission was leaking so I'm not sure if that is intentional.

The washers should be present, but it will be okay without them for a while. The shifter doesn't require lubrication.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

It's not so much a washer as it is a foam spacer. All it does is put pressure on the coupling so it doesn't rattle and removes any slop/play.
