Swaping G240 to a G260 and have questions.

    Hi,

I recently did a cooling system and engine replacement on my E30 1992 BMW 318i Convertible (which is the same as a 1991 - last year of body style). It has an M42 engine. The head gasket was blown. The new engine is great! No issues with it. While replacing it I also replaced the motor and tranny mounts. Before the replacement every now and then the tranny would pop out of gear when down shifting into 4th. Also if I remember correctly it would grind going to 1st unless I put it into 2nd first. Now the issue is exasperated. It violently throws it out of 1st and also throws it out of 4th. If I hold tight it will make a metallic popping sound, the car shudders and it goes into those two gears. 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and reverse are fine. While driving if I let off the gas and coast with it in any gear there is a slight vibration and light noise. After any lengthy drive there is a strong odor of burnt clutch (most likely from riding it in 2nd and 5th).
I’m almost certain I have a Getrag 240 based on the pictures I see and what I remember of it. I was told it is the synchros. Is this tranny toast? Is it rebuild-able and if so where do I get the parts? If it is best to replace it do I have to use the G240 or are there others to choose from that directly bolt in?
I just found a getrag 260 from a 1989 325i that’s within my budget. Has anyone here done this swap? Can I directly bolt the g260 in place of the g240? Supposedly the bolt holes are the same for an M44 engine which uses the g240 so the m42 which also uses the g240 should line up. Worried about trans mounts, shifter/selector placement, flywheel, throw out barring, drive shaft length, etc…
Any knowledge in this area will be greatly appreciated. I have a friend standing by right now to pick up the g260 for me.

I think you might be able to adapt a G260 to the car, but the smart thing is to source a good used 240. The transmission can be rebuilt, but it does require some special tools. Not really a DIY project.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

More information: The engine I put in was an m42 from a 1993 318is (E36). I reused my intake, wiring, ECU and oil pans. (Wound up leaving two of the oil pan bolts out)

I have been reading the forums and finding a lot of info but nothing that specifically addresses my issue. I guess I’m looking for someone who has done this swap before or is an expert.

Also if anyone has a good working g240 for sale in Arizona I would be interested and I’ll just forget doing the swap.
