Anyone changed a read diff before? Take a look.

    Hello,

I am in search for a new LSD diff, I have an m20 with a 4.10 LSD and I do A LOT of high way driving so I am going to switch it out. I plan to have a 24v swap this summer so I figure I should do the rear diff now. I am thinking a 3.25 LSD. Anyone disagree with that choice? If so why?

And I am reading that I only need to change the bushing when doing this swap?
Any other bushings I should do now also?

    Thanks everyone.

Yeah the 3.25 seems best on 24v. I personaly think the 3.73 would be a good compromise

What differential ratio to use depends on what transmission you will use in the swap. A Getrag 260 has a 1:1.1 fifth gear, but the transmission for an M/S/50/52 has a 1:1 fifth gear. If doing a lot of highway driving and not using a G260 a 3.15 may be the better choice.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I will be running the stock 325i tranny I have now for a long time. So it sounds like 3.25 LSD is a good call?

Holy crap, Jim actually posted something incorrect!

I bet it is just a typo.

(dude is never wrong, a veritable fount of correctness!)

            The G250 has a 1:1 5th, but the G260 and the G240 both have a .81:1 true overdrive 5th.

The ZF that is commonly found in E34s and E36s also has a 1:1 final drive.

BMW chose to use a 3.73 with the G260 on their M20 powered cars, it is a good mix of acceleration and economy. Personally, I plan on a G260 and a 3.46 behind a 3 liter M54 as my drivetrain, but in my E34.

I can just about guarantee a miserable experience with anything under a 3.46 on an M20, unless boosted.

I have a 3.46 with g260 and love it. I wish I had a 3.73 for the track, but for street driving the 3.46 is a great compromise.

Damn, that very similar to my plans. what kind of power are you making? have you dynoed it? So you wouldnt want a 3.25? Why do you like the 3.46 and kind of want the 3.73? Sorry for so many questions. I do A LOT of highway driving, to and from college.

                      Thanks again everyone.

Not sure on exact power but probably 210-220 whp. I want a 3.73 for the track because then 3rd gear is more useable out of corners, but since its a dual purpose car I kinda need the 3.46 to keep the revs down on the highway.
