Hey guys, I have a problem that's gradually been getting worse. The sound I would compare it to is a rhythmic disc brake squeak, though it only happens on deceleration from about 2000-1000rpms. If I disengage the clutch at any point during this time it almost completely goes away. If I am accelerating it makes no noise in that RPM range. I do have a bit of play in my driveline (most likely U-joint play or in my diff) that gives me the typical driveline thrash and clunk from 1st to 2nd. I have a few ideas of what it could be but I'd just like to hear your guy's unbiased opinion. Thanks!

Sqeaking sound, related to low RPM and deceleration.

WAG == Wild A**ed Guess.
To elaborate further. If the ring to pinion clearance in the differential is off it may make a whining noise on acceleration, deceleration, or both. Incorrect clearance in the differential can also result in clunks when shifting as can bad u-joints in the drive shaft. Although less likely the transmission is possibility. But that usually can be identified by slipping the transmission into neutral.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

OK so the sound seems to diminish from 1st to 5th gear as you decelerate from 2000-1000rpm. I don't think it's speed or transmission related. It seems like when the driveline is more "loaded" it makes less noise. Also, when I reverse, the squeaking appears as the driveline heaves (from clutching in and out, maneuvering out of parking stalls and such). Sound feels like its coming from the diff when I listen closely. I should also note that I swapped out an open diff for an LSD unit back in the summer and the same driveline thrash remained.Comment

if the whining is related to load then it quite possibly could be differential related
usually first thing to go in the rear end is pinion bearings and races; if they are extremely worn will allow improper mesh of the ring and pinion and you will have both bearing and gear whine. I just replaced the bearings and ring and pinion in my daily driver; noise would decrease significantly when clutch was dis-engaged from un-loading the pinion gear but still whine from the ring and pinon wearing against each other
one easy way to tell if you have a dead bearing is to drain the diff fluid - if there is metal present then you know there is a problem inside.OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

Just gonna bump this up... So the sound has completely stopped. Should I be worried about something failing soon? Because I am... Any ideas of what it could be?Comment
