And how does that make the shifter shorter? It doesn't make any sence why that would do any good. Am I missing something?

Missing?

Proportion. As the length of the lever below the pivot point lengthens(the extension)the distance the upper part must move to make it travel the same distance shortens. Extreme case: upper part length=1" - lower part length =1'.
