    Flywheels

Okay, so I know going from Auto to 5-speed, you need the specific 5-speed single mass 5-speed flywheel. I've done a 5-speed swap before, so I know how this works

    BUT

What if I wanted to upgrade the whole transmission itself? Say to a ZF or a Getrag 420

I don't presume I would be able to use the Getrag 260 flywheel; I'm assuming I would have to use the specific flywheels and clutch kits offered on those transmissions, correct?

ZF310/320 and a Getrag 420 all use the E36 and newer bellhousing style. You'd have to build a new trans support brace to twist the tranny to mount correctly. Then you'd have to modify your linkage.

As far as using an M20 flywheel on a ZF or a Getrag 420, it will work just fine. Match the starter to the flywheel and the pilot bearing to the trans.

So then I would need to buy the specific pilot bearing for the e36/e46 transmissions? I'm asumming these are all direct fit into an m20?

        Yes.

That is the one point I'm not sure of. I'm going to say yes because the M20 pilot bearing fits in the e36 motors no problem.

Then I'm assuming the S54 pilot bearings will fit as fitting a Getrag 420 to an m20/s52 isn't an outlandish occurrence

          Thanks Danny
