How do you know if used tranny is still good??

Hey guys, I was planing on buying a used 325e five speed trans, but im not sure if the transmission is still good. Its all there, with aluminum shift console. How should I go about checking if its still in working condition and not shot, since its out of the car?????

unless you can drive it there is no way to tell if the internals are in good shape. Sorry.

Look for leaky seals. U can check for shaft play (output/input)
Bad seals could mean that level was ran low and smoked the layshaft.
You can also check to see if the level is good.

When you say shaft play, you mean vertical/horizontal play or rotational play?

How many threads are you going to start about a damn transmission?

          This isn't rocket science.

The first response to your post has the answer. In the absence of obvious, visual, damage to a transmission the only way to know if it is good is to install it in a car and see how it behaves.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
