    Reverse Problem

Hey guys I got my car home today. Anyways when loading it on the trailer I tried to back it up. Went all the way left and up. I know its next to first. Anyways just a grind. Pumped the clutch with no change. So ended up just pushing it backwards. So I have paper work from a shop a few years ago. Owner said he swapped the transmission from an early eta car. So being this is a 87 325is this could be the problem. Paper work says they had to work to make the shifter work. So I may look at it some and see if there is a problem. Worst case it comes out for a pick and pull unit. 3 325i in they junk yard right now. Anything i should look for? Any help would be nice.

Your 87 would have has the aluminum shifter console, but a transmission from an early eta car uses the sheet metal shifter and doesn't have the mount for the aluminum console. So the shop would have had to change the shifter. Otherwise the eta transmission will work fine.

The grind when trying to engage reverse sounds like a clutch that isn't fully releasing. Not a shifter or transmission problem. This would likely be a problem in the clutch hydraulics, but it could be a problem with the pressure plate. Start by replacing the clutch master, slave, and soft line.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I will check the hydraulics. Could be the problem. Car has been sitting a while. However the foward gears work fine.

Bumping this up. So looked around some. The car has an 84-85 shifter assembly in it since it has an 84-85 transmission. I also played with it some and found this problem.

As you can see it seems it looks like the shifter is bottoming out so it can not go into gear. Its happening for reverse and what feels like 5th gear as well. So what to do from here?
