    Shifting arm lenght

Does anybody knows how long should be the shifting arm, for m20b25 with getrag gearbox? I made it from m40b18 but it seems too long, so shifting arm is kinda not in the middle in interrior, but more to back, so want to find out exact lengt. :)

If you have the aluminum carrier then there are two different lengths that could have been installed. If the shifter and transmission are from 86 - 89 model year in the us then they had a selector rod that is about 8 1/8" long, but it could have also had a length of 7 3/4" as well which is why there is a lot of confusion. They both look very similar except the longer one has a slight indent in the middle to accommodate the balancer on the driveline and the end that connects to the transmission is 3/8" longer than the end that connects to the shifter.

If it is a 90 and later, then it had a selector rod that is about 8 1/8" long, the same length as the longer earlier one, but the main difference is that the two connecting shafts are the same length on both ends. This means that the transmission side has a different smaller end and corresponding coupler piece on the tranny.

I am trying to find the earlier shorter length selector rod and am not having any luck. I tried to install the slightly longer one in the car and the shifter will not go into reverse at all because it hits the console and going into first and third it is also hitting up top and I don't think it will allow the transmission to go all the way into gear. It is amazing what 3/8" does!

The difference between porcupines and BMWs is that porcupines have the pricks on the outside!
