    simple fix but need help

my e30 wont go into reverse because the shifter keeps hitting the center console.

it seems the shift rod joint or (selector rod joint) is out of place causing it to be crooked i tried adjusting but it didnt work.

i ordered a new one with a O ring and the dowell pin for the shift joint.

is this the problem? i thought it was a simple fix

Seems like you have other issues than just the part you showed. I would replace the washers to remove some slop as well as check the shifter carrier. It could be loose or even installed incorrectly allowing too much slop.

That is the rod joint, it can cause slop if the inner plastic piece is worn out. It is non adjustable.

Nothing is adjustable in the shifter assembly: the reason you have play is because the components that compose your shifter assembly are worn out.

The main parts that could be worn out are the inner bushing of the rod joint, and the inner bushing of the shift lever. The shifter carrier bushing (front and rear) could also be worn out.

By design E30 shifters are doomed to go sloppy over time because the materials that keep it tight are made out of things like rubber and hard plastic. Here is the no-bullshit way of getting that shifter tight again. You will need parts 6 and 13 from the dealer. Part 2 from a third
