3rd gear grind, what are my options.

Hi guys, 3rd gear is being a bitch to upshift into at anything over 3k rpm. If i double clutch it doesnt grind at all.. is this just a dead or dying syncro?

im already running Redline oil and it's fresh.

since these transmissions are cheap, i assume the best things for me to do is to replace the whole thing and not worry about trying to fix the 3rd gear syncro.

last question. if replacing the trans is the best option, are there any ways to know im going to be buying a good one? I would be pissed to do the work and get another one with another problem.

The only way to be sure of getting a good transmission is to get a rebuilt or get one out of a parts car that you can drive before pulling the transmission. That said, your odds are pretty good if the transmission comes from a low mileage (<130k) car.

Same thing happened to me.
3rd gear was getting hard to get into unless I double clutch.
Bearings inside are misaligned.

I bought a used transmission probably 2 months before mine finally grenaded, knowing it was just a matter of time. Strategy to buying one was to get one from a reputable person, which I did and has been fine thus far. Or what Jim said.
