    Getrag 260/5/50 "e" and "i" Swap

I've posted something about this before but now have better information. Doing a swap with an 325e Getrag 260 5 speed into a 325iC auto.

My 325e donor car Getrag 260 was produced 02/86 and stamped 260.0.1270.90. My donor 325e had a "thick" single mass flywheel (part 11221705046). It had 132K miles on it and I'm assuming that that this flywheel was resurfaced maybe only once and it is still 38mm thick. After some research I found that they put single or twin mass on the "e" models.
I've bought a new clutch kit for my 89 325iC (sachs original part 21-21-1-223-102 for a 325i) which I will be converting from an auto. I got a used "i" flywheel that is 32mm thick (part number 11221706573). When I measure the thickness of the pressure plate and flywheel of this new unit it measures 75mm. When I measure the "e" flywheel and old pressure plate it measures 84mm.

Someone did a great info at http://www.unofficialbmw.com/phpBB/v...ic.php?t=33173

But this implies that a later model "e" that has the newer "i" shifter brackets has a shallow bell housing. While this may be the case for a different production date of the "e" 260 transmission, it isn't the case for mine. Mine has a slightly different bell housing to an "i" housing (260.0.1346.90) that is deeper and has late model shifter brackets.

My theory is that the bell housing on all 2.7 "e" models had a deeper housing to accommodate the thicker twin mass or fat single mass flywheel and pressure plate. Realoem says that the "i" transmission (bell) housing is part.23111222658 and that an "e" transmission (bell) housing is part 23111222657. They don't differentiate this 23111222657 part from earlier to later "e" models. The rear transmission cover (part 23111228020) is listed the same for any "i" or "e" even though some had the ears for the late model shifter.

The picture shows a 88 325i Getrag 260.0.1346.90 on top and my 02/86 325e 260.0.127.90 on the bottom. Notice the differences. With the "e" the bolt goes through the sensor mount. with the "i" they've changed the senor mount and the bolt goes under it. There are other cosmetic differences. Also, if you measure from the bell housing edge to the slave plate it is 180mm on the "e". On the "i" it's only 176mm. So this is a later model "e" 260 that has a deep bellhousing with late model shifter mounts.

So when I put on the thinner 325i flywheel and pressure plate, there will be a further distance for the throw-out bearing to travel....maybe too far. My throw out bearing came with the clutch and is 25mm thick (ear to edge). Part 21517521471. This throw-out is listed in Realoem for both the "i" and "e" models. To compensate for this increased distance, a 323i throw-out should be used that is 30mm thick (ear to edge) part number 21511204525. That should suck up most of the extra distance.

As far as i can see, the slave cylinder and other components are identical. I have the output flange covered as its small.

So do you think I have this right?

    Thanks
