    Pedal Assembly Question

I'm about to undertake an auto-->manual swap on an '87 325is. I've read using a pedal assembly from an early (non-airbag) car into a late model (airbag) car does not work or is at least not recommended.

How about the opposite? Could I use a pedal box from an airbag equipped car in my early model?

    Thanks,
    Dustin

You should be able to just add the clutch pedal from either variant to the pedal box in the car.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Thanks Jim. So you're saying I should be able to swap just the brake and clutch pedals by themselves?
It seems I should be able to make it work one way or another. I'm just trying to avoid any setbacks and did not realize early and late model pedal boxes were different.

Here is what I'm working with (from '90 325ix):

I thought late model pedal assemblies did not have the large clutch spring. This one obviously does which is confusing.

You don't actually need that return spring. I've done two auto conversions and they didn't have the springs included with the pedal boxes that I bought. The clutch pedal will return on its own.

As a followup, the late-model assembly worked perfectly. The only difference, when compared to what was removed, was the upper dash portion was significantly longer and did not seem to fit as-is. We ended up using an angle grinder to remove the excess portion and then welded the accelerator spring bracket onto the late-model assembly. Success.
