Auto trans woes.

Got a cheapo 325i and I'm trying to find out if I can get this auto to work. So thing will just rev in all gears but it'll just faintly try to grab reverse. Putting it in park holds the car.

What would be the first thing to try out to see if I can get this to work?
5-speed swap is an option but if I can get this auto to work I'd be stoked.

Make sure the fluid level is correct, you could try to change out the filter and fluid but most likely it has failed from the typical front clutchpack melt down.

This, or pump for the torque converter has failed giving you no gears.

Is the oil very black?
