drives in reverse only?

Well. i found a 86 325e.
The seller says it drives in reverse only. Any Ideason whats the problem, and how to fix it?

Just a shot in the dark, but I'd assume the car is an auto, and the trans is screwed, allowing you only to engage reverse.

if its a 5spd it may be a badly wasted flex disc. I've seen this disable cars going forward, but shit "catches" on itself to move backwards.

Could also be a wasted 5spd. When I first got my car on the road I killed the tranny slamming it into 3rd with monsterous force against its will. (too fast)

I broke off 2 shift forks inside the case. I lost all forward gears, and could only get into reverse.

If its an auto, its probably related to the valve body, which means $$$ to get that fixed, but there are a few automagic transmissions forsale here on the forums for dirt cheap ~100 bucks or so.

If its a 5 speed, sounds like maybe shifter linkage, or theres some bent forks or something not allowing the shifter to get it out of reverse. could have stripped a transferre gear or something, too.

Its probably a pretty easy deal, or its going to be a bitch deal. If the price is right, do it, you can get a new transmission for under 200 bucks in most areas.

And a flex disc in a 5speed? wow.

im not a mechanic but ehres my input

the teeth of the gears form 1st-5th, are cut at an angle like //// that

the reverse gear is a straight forward normal gear cut with teeth like ||||||| that

(that is also why reverse makes that whiring noise)

so it is possable the forward gears are all fusked up... just my 2 cents
