    E30/m30 Center Bearing Failing

    Hello,
Got a 86 325e with a m30/b34 conversion. We do lemons/chumps. At Watkins Glen a few months back our drive shaft center bearing ( actually the rubber around it) was gone after Saturday. I got a used one and raced all day Sunday. I'm getting the car ready for VIR ( 24hr long race) and found the rubber is bad again at the center bearing. Inputs??

No vibrations ( not until the rubber breaks loose around the bearing). The alignment looks good. The one thing I did notice is that the rear trans mounts are ripped. Would this cause enough mis-alignment to rip the center bearing apart? I have new poly trans mounts I'll install along with a new center bearing again.

Just want to make sure I'm not missing something. Once VIR starts I don't plan on working on the car for the next 24hrs.

Last year our cheap HID lights went out , my eprom had a bad solder joint that took awhile to figure out and one driver had motion sickness. This year - balls to the wall.

    Thanks

yes, ripped rear mounts can make the driveshaft buck, which will rip the CSB.

what driveshaft are you using? is your CSB stretched in either direction when installed?

Bad transmission (or engine) mounts, a bad guibo, or a bad drive shaft can cause the center bearing to fail.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Make sure you get a decent center bearing as well. I've had several failures (including my own car) from competent race prep shops using the MTC and URO center bearings due to bad rubber. They are typically much less than a Febi or OEM center bearing but it's not worth it.

Thanks for the inputs.. Just got back from pulling the trans to fix trans/rear main leaks. Sure enough - one trans mount was totally gone and the other was 90% torn off. I had bought some poly units so those went back in. Hopefully that will take care of it.

I am using part of a early e30 drive shaft with part of a e28 that we cut down 2.5". We raced last year and didn't have the CSB issue - so we think the shaft is good.

          Thanks Again
