Don't know anything about the technical aspects of the swap, but from what I've heard it's too expensive for the gains, unless you're doing it for the pure bad-assery.

Taken from another forum (complete hear-say):
If you can find the e36 Euro 6-speed tranny, it will cost a few thousand dollars. You will also have to make a custom length driveshaft and tranny racket. Also, you will have to modify your shift likage.
Probably would need a new differential too because the gearing will be different.

It is possable. I was considdering getting the Euro 6-speed to use when I install my s50, but I decided against it. I decided that I should not have to pay the same amount for the tranny, as I did for my low milage s50.

No, haven't tried, but me and another local dude are searching for one right now to put behind a e30 m3 s50.

I'll bet they bolt right up, but I'm not sure if you'd have to pound out the transmission tunnel.

They pretty much have to bolt up- I bet you could even use one from an e46 m3. All in all, it'd be pretty easy. If you were putting it onto an m20, you'd basically have to do the reverse of putting a getrag 260 on an m50 (as far as linkage goes) The driveshaft would need to be custom, but thats probably only about $200-300 depending on shortening, or lenthening. You then have the bracket to make, which any competent welder should be able to do.

            Look on car-part.com

There are a few on there.

I don't think that the m62 and m20/50/54s have the same bolt pattern

Yes it will fit. Tranny bracket will have to be fabbed. Short throw shifter and linkage will have to be assembled. Getting mine sorted at the moment. e46 330i 6-speed behind an s52.

Sixth on the E46 trannies is .85:1 IIRC.

also e36 m3 auto drive shafts are the correct length for the swap thus no custom shaft needed
also m6x will not bolt to the m20 or m/s5x patterns
looking for a e30m50 swap harness adapter pm me $150 shipped
