Auto Tranny randomly goes into neautral?

Ok so I'm new to this forum and I got a 1988 bmw 325i convertable. So the problem started a few days ago and stopped when I got a new alternator and battery. So I go to drive the car and sometimes it slips and sometimes it doesn't. It's in gear and goes to shift to 2nd it does then from 2nd to 3rd it seems like it goes into neautral then just revs freely, I changed the the alternator and battery and it stops for a few days. .... : so I noticed when it slipped the headlights would dim for a second and when I changed the alternator and battery they didn't dim and the tranny would not slip." Any help? Also sometimes it takes a few seconds to go in to drive. Thanks for any help. Could it be bad ground to the tranny sensors?

How old is the fluid in it? It could be a couple of things. A valve could be sticking in the valve body for one.

no it is not. on an 88 it is on the crank vibration damper at the front. and an 88 e30 has a 4hp22, not an 4hp22e. the issue the PO is experiencing is an internal trans issue

How would I check the valve body. .? I have already drained. And refilled with some Lucas and fresh oil. I had a amplifier connected and a chain dropped on the positive and negative and they crossed after that it started slipping. Then I chaged the oil. And then a new battery with a new alternator. Then the tranny stopped slipping for about tree days. Again bam starts up again not as bad but tends to slip slightly. Thanks for the help.
