    Early style sheet metal shifter

For starters I hate the slop in the shifter, is there a way to fix most/all of it with the early style? Or do I need to try and convert it to late style? I did do a Google search for like 20min and found nothing. So any help or suggestions are welcomed, thanks.

If your trans has the raised slots for the later style shifter you can add it to your trans like from my 86 eta. If it doesn't have the 2 slots on the top of the trans I don't think you add it. My trans came with the sheet metal shifter. Hope this helps.

      Yep.

Also I happen to have a shift carrier for sale. Reinforced too (they sometimes break in half... First hand experience)

Everything to build the early style shifter is still available new. Part numbers are on RealOEM.

The only way to convert your car to the late style shifter is if it's a 86 and newer. The 84-85 transmissions don't have the provision for the late style carrier.

Yeah that's what I was just noticing. I'm building my eta which is an 84, doesn't have those ears. On another note am I only able to do oe style replacement parts, no upgraded bushings or selector rod? Also am able to remove that ugly looking balancer on the tail shaft as well?

Yes you can. Mine is removed. You have to use a thin wall 30mm and large deep socket.easy if you have a impact gun.

Cool. Would it be easier to do it before or after I hook up the trans? The engine/trans is pulled and separated to do all new gaskets, ect.

I have virtually zero slop and I'm running an early sheet metal console. All OEM rebuilt.

                I do have a Z3M shifter though...

More info please. Didn't know I could run a different shifter. Also how much is virtually no slop? What shifters am I able to use without hitting the drive shaft.

Z3M will hit the driveshaft, unless you raise the sheet metal console. I ended up finding out the hard way and raised the tab that holds the rear of the console. A Z3 2.8 shifter should clear the driveshaft. Keep in mind Z3 2.8 and M require the lever to be bent to match the E30.

There is maybe a couple millimeters at best of "play" in my shifter, but it is also super notchy (as I prefer it).

I love notchy, so I prefer that. My car is early 84(not sure if it matters) the rear of the console was just floating there. How would I go about bending the lever with out damaging it, also is the bend I'm mimicking just from the pivot ball up?

bump they are right, if you need to raise the sheet metal shifter - heres what I did

The rubber buffer that attaches the right angle tab that bolts to the body, and the sheet metal console needs deleted. Not only does it allow alot of play, it just sucks

Use an airbox mount/bushing, the type with two m6 studs coming out. the z3 shifter would be fine with this setup

The airbox mount made my e60 shifter hit the driveshaft, so I took it out and replaced it with two plastic washers from ACE hardware. They are like 1/4" ID and 1 inch OD. I drilled the holes out to accept a m8 bolt, and bolted it all together, with the bolt head on the bottom side of the shift console (if that makes sense).

my e60 shifter barely clears the driveshaft now but it has no problems

Very little play, however I find that the plastic bushing I had to cut to slip over the selector rod is allow vertical (up and down) play. I believe the OE tensioning spring is too weak so I am going to use another plastic washer to make a spacers to get rid of the play

                        cheers

all experience in this post is based off my e28 eta
