    Getrag 265/5 Bellhousing

Hi everybody, first of all sorry for my bad english, im a Spaniard

I need your help because I want to fit a e30 m3 getrag 265/5 (dogleg) transmission into my 87 325i. I have read that getrag 265/5 gearboxes have removable bellhousing, so the question is about the bell I will need to fit the 265/5. My 325i mounts Motronic 1.0 so needs a bell with two holes for the crank position and rpm sensors.

So the question is: Are there any bell from any BMW model that allows me to fit a Getrag 265/5 into a m20 engine with Motronic 1.0 sensor holes?

    Thank you:-D

Euro 525e came with a M20 and a 265, but was available for one year only, so your chances of finding one are very very slim. I am not sure exactly what year it was, but I believe it was 1986.

    Your English is muy bueno!

US ones do too I think, I got mine from the US originally. 323i's can also sometimes be found with dog leg boxes.

You have to make sure you get a real dog leg too, lots of people selling OD transmissions from M3's as doglegs, assuming they all got them (not the case).

323 dogleg is a 245 without removable bellhousing, but it bolts up to an M20 just fine (duh).

Some 323i e21's and e30's mounts Getrag 245 dogleg. Like Ray says a 245 bolts up fine into my m20b25 but I will have to update my motronic 1.0 to 1.3. No Getrag 245 has holes for the 1.0 sensors.

That's why I'm looking for a bellhousing able to bolt into a m20 and with the famous motronic 1.0 sensor holes. Its the easy way to mount a Getrag 265/5 (The most desirable dogleg)

I think it's the only dogleg BMW has sold on a production car? no? Can anyone correct me on that?

Yeah, it was if the OP just wants to run a dogleg, no problems running a 245 instead of a 265. It's very easy to change your 325i to motronic 1.3 and run the crank sensor on the front of the motor, so you can use any box you want.

You'll find some 325i's with a dogleg too. It's just a pretty rare gearbox with most people having no desire to sell the housing by itself.

In the USA, 1982 528E had the M20/265 combo. It was a one year only application and they are not very hard to find here.

BMW sold close ratio (dogleg) gearboxes on 2002, E21 4 and 6 cylinder,E30, AND all the cars that used the 265 close ratio.

as said above. 245's came on E21 and E30 323i's too. 320iS had one, and im not sure the shift pattern of them, but you could find a 232 close ratio box in a 2002.

                    I did not know that!

Well, anyways, IMHO, a dogleg isn't that great for a street car. I think it's more of a "mods list" bragging rights kind of thing. I'll take my g265 non-dogleg in stop and go traffic any day.

It's no different to drive than any other gearbox, it's not like they area true dog box with straight cut gearsets. It's probably easier actually because the 2-3 shift is inline. It just means you don't have the OD 5th gear for cruising on highways, so the revs will be a little higher.

BMW also used taller FD's with the cars that go dogleg boxes, right?

Dogleg just refers to the shift pattern... it's not dog-engagement gearset.

In terms of gearing, it's not really much different than running a ZF 310/320.

Yes, most M30 cars were 3.07 FD.

The M20 and M30 close ratio boxes have very similar gearing to the OD units (first gear typically bmw short)

Some of the 2002 close ratios had a pretty tall first gear and are really nice in my opinion.

The e23 came with an optional 4-speed dogleg too if I'm not mistaken.

I'm pretty sure you are wrong.

Plus, what would the point of a dogleg 4 speed be ? It negates the advantage of a dogleg since the usable forward gears are already in an "H" pattern.
