    Clutch? Transmission? Or both

    Here's the run down.

87 325is, shifted fine with no problems whatsoever. A new clutch job and ssk was going to happen after my trip.
On my road trip/ vacation and a bunch of unfortunate events occurred to the car. Got stuck driving in a blizzard for 10 hours. Around the 10 hours of driving in it there was a accident where I had to slow down and in doing so there was a strange shift feeling when down shifted. Didn't think to much of it and figured it was just the fact of it being cold out and maybe I was just going insane for being in the car to long.
Then I got cut off by some speeding idiot not even a hour later and lost control and slammed driver side nose first at around 60mph into a concrete barrier. The engine to my surprise is untouched, but now there is something wrong with the transmission but was able to drive and made it to where I need to be. Had a shop took a look and pulled the front out for the radiator fan to work and said I should be able to make it back home for me to fix it. Got in it and at the light I put it in first to go and all of a sudden a loud thunk, car dies. Shifter feels like I'm not in gear but can't get it into gear. Can't let off the clutch or the car dies but can't accel because it's kinda in reverse but not? Can't push it out of traffic because even with foot on clutch there is no neutral. I get the car out of the tow yard to tow back and the car is drivable? Drained the trans fluid and it's grey, shiny, and super foamy with a ton flakes and a lot of metal pins? Now it's grinding/ rattling noise in neutral goes away when clutch pressed in. Hard to shift into reverse,1st, and 2nd gear. In 1st unless a lot of throttle is used it will thunk and it's stuck but not In gear until I throw it in 5th and break free (I feel it). In any gear driving same noise of grinding/rattle only when letting off gas, as soon as throttle is applied noise is gone. Also found out if say coasting in neutral down to a stop from 50 there is barely any noise when placed into neutral and no clutch until about 5mph and that's when it slowly comes back.

Your thoughts? I originally thought it was TO or clutch related until I drained the tranny. I still would like to know what these little pins are because there is a ton.

Update. If left in neutral and parked after say 5 mins it starts to kind of buck and it sounds like it's falling into gear by its self.

Sounds like you have some internal transmission problems. These aren't too fun to work on so unless you have a Bentley manual and a spare car to drive I would just look for a replacement transmission.
