air in system? or something else?

i recentlly did a 5spd swap everything went ok until the very end. with the engine off I can put the transmission into all the gears fine. with the car running I cannot (not even grindimg them in). The bad thing is i dont have a clutch pedal spring and im not quite sure how far the pedal is suppose to come back up. I am 95% sure its air because the pedal only comes back up about an inch or less from the floor. ( new master and slave) if it helps the master and slave are for a 325is and I believe the tranny is from a 5 series later model. the other possibilities I can think of is either I need a 5 series slave, throwout bearing got off track, or the clutch pivot pin broke. any opinions? or does anyone know how far the pedal is suppose to come back up?

Even without the clutch spring the pedal should come up to within about 3/4" of the top. Air in the system can keep the clutch from disengaging (which is what you are seeing) but should have little effect of how far back up the pedal comes. A bad master cylinder, wrong or mis-matched parts, or improper assembly are possibilities for what you are seeing.

Was the transmission a Getrag 260?
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

yes it is a g260 but it came off an older 5 series. I read that the slave cylinders are the same but maybe I need a 323i tob? im so confused on why the pedal wont come up fully unless there is air somewhere in the system.

if the slave cylinder isnt pushing against the clutch fork the same issue will occur correct? (pedal not going 3/4 of the way up)

If the G260 came off an older 5 series and has the ports for the ETA timing sensors it may have the deeper bell housing. In which case you must use the 323 throwout bearing.
