    Grinding in shift linkage?

Driving along in my e30 today, I noticed a sound coming from my gear stick, sounds like a grinding. It gets faster as you accelerate and slower as you decelerate, but here is the kicker, if you pull up wards on the gear stick holding it out of the way of whatever it is rubbing on no noise and back to normal driving, but you have to hold this up. I have done some searching on realoem but have yet to find a bushing or part number for what i am looking for. Does anyone know what this could be and or had this problem, maybe also have a potential fix for it? I'm stumped here, and don't have time to take it apart for a few days to see whats going on. NO WORRIES I AM NOT DRIVING THE CAR WITH THIS PROBLEM. thanks.

Basically replace all the bushings/washers seen here:

    Numbers 2, 6, 8, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 19.

Number 6 is likely the main problem, but I'm sure everything else will be worn out as well.

yeah, im of the belief that the problem is a bushing, I believe that the problem one is #6. The trans has never been out of the car that I know of at least in the time that I've owned the car. Thanks for the advice though! Any idea of how involved replacing the bushing #6 is? Could I do it without dropping the trans? Thanks again guys for the help.

your shift lever is most likely sagging and causing your selector rod to rub on the driveshaft harmonic balancer. the main bushing/cup thing that holds the shift lever is most likely the culprit, but i would recommend a full shifter rebuild because it will fix that problem and tighten everything else up which is good.

also spend the big bucks and shell out for the uuc selector rod. it's worth it.
