    Differential ID? Need help.

    Hi guys,

I'm at the point where I need to get all the mechanicals sorted for my project. The only problem I have at the moment is the diff. When I got the engine and so on from the UK, the diff had no cover on it. I had initially opted for a 3.25 LSD and got sent a 3.91 LSD instead, I have since had my mechanic swap the ring & pinion to 3.23, so that's fine.

However I'm in need of a cover, I'd like to believe I have a Type 188 from the E30 but seeing the E36 Type 188 looks roughly the same, is there any way I can determine if this is the E30 one?

    Pics here:

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

E30 has one ear and e36 has two ears. They are not the same.

Indeed, but I need to buy the cover since I never got it with one. So I need to determine what diff it is before buying said cover.

        Ok wasn't following you.

here is a random google shot. E30 on left and 2002 on right.

Yours appears to be an e30 but I can't tell 100% by the pictures you posted

You're right. I had difficulty with my own photos to attempt an ID as well.

I'll have to pop round in 2 days when I'm off work and take a few more photos since the diff is at the mechanic's.

            You have a E30/e28/e24 Type 188

            E30 Type 188 ID:

4 holes in case top to bolt to subframe
            6 bolts each side cap
            8 bolts on rear cover
            OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

Z4 non powered steering rack fits e30

            Euro e46 2005/6 320d 6mt gearbox into E30 with M20 hardy and beck 1985 327s engine

Thanks both. I checked aagain and took extra photos and indeed it matches up to an E30 type 188.

I've got peace of mind now and have ordered the cover. Thanks once again :D
