PO swapped 1985e Getrag 260 into 1987is...rebuilding shifter

I am purchasing a 1987 325is from a local Bimmer-phile. He runs a reputable shop that caters mostly to Euro's. He purchased this car and began to have issues with 1st gear, and proceeded to swap in the transmission from a 1985 325e parts car. Car has been driven (even rallycrossed until a split oil pan) since then, but he says that the car will need to be switched to the later style shifter linkage and carrier.

Is this necessary? If I rebuild the existing early style linkage/sheet metal carrier, why would I need to switch to the later aluminum style shifter/carrier? The car does not have provisions for the late style shifter (ie the "ears" on top on the housing), but I hear there is a part for M3's that are a bracket that can be used to mount them. I also have found from other sources that the m3 part will only work for getrag 265's.

If anyone has some experience with swapping an early trans into a later car, please let me know what is necessary for it to work properly. Do I need the new style, or can I just rebuild the early shifter and use it in my late car?

Thats the part I've seen, but has anyone confirmed that it actually works with the early 260 trans? In this thread http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=309740 , it seems like the part won't work...unless its been proven elsewhere. Please enlighten me.

I'm willing to get the part just to see if it will work, and will be able to look at it in person tomorrow to get a better idea, but I'd rather know if I'm better off just working with what I have.

I've never seen anybody use the g265 brace on a g260 but it would be interesting to find out, I've always assumed the only option for the early g260s were to stay plate style or get creative customizing it.

Still if there's nothing wrong with you current plate style why change it

The adapter plate fitting is an urban legend. It does not fit a 260.

There is nothing wrong or even out of place using the early sheet metal carrier on a late car, my '89 has a '84 323 gearbox in it with no modified parts.

Well that sucks. I already ordered one. Looks I'll have to make some adapters to fit the adapter.

I'm just here to confirm that the E30 M3 adapter does NOT FIT the 260 trans.

Hopefully people will stop spreading this misinformation.

Edited my post. I'll try to find the thread where I got the idea. Maybe you can edit that too.

Looked at the trans first hand today. The problem the owner was describing was due to him putting the selector rod on the wrong way. Ill be rebuilding the plate style shifter and carrier and installing it correctly. Thanks all for the help.

Hopefully we can keep a few people from ordering parts based on rumor. The plate style shifter (which I had never seen until this car) looks very solid, and I don;t see why it would be beneficial to switch. Just work with whatever you have.
