Clutch/Flywheel confusion

The clutch is bad on my mother's 1987 325es. I was about to order up a clutch when I ran into some questions about the job involving the flywheel. It's unclear to me if the car has a dual mass flywheel or the bellhousing mounted crank position sensor. Is there a way to tell based on the model or production date? I'd just look under the car for the CPS, but I'm a two hour drive away.

If it turns out it does have a DMF, what is required to switch it over to the single mass unit?

All 84 through 87 model year 325/325e/325eS have the trans mounted crank sensors.

I still haven't figured out which year Etas got single mass vs dual mass flywheels.

If you want to convert to a single mass flywheel it has to be from an Eta and not a M20B25.

just for the info, my car is a 4/1986 325es and it has an ETA Single Mass FW. i read somewhere that the pre 4/86 ETAs has a single mass. so it might be 4/86 and older?

My 10/86 and 7/87 both have dual mass flywheels and deep bellhousings.

I think it's probably safe to assume yours is dual mass.

Have you tried looking up the Vin on realoem.com?
