    High pitched metal grinding sound

85 4door 318i. High pitched metal on metal sound coming from the area where driveshaft meets the diff. Starts as soon as I start rolling and picks up louder as I increase speed and while coasting. I have my back seats out at the moment and it's clearly coming from that area and gets ridiculously loud. Any input on what it possibly is appreciated.

Have you looked under the car? I'll bet something (a stick, etc) has got caught there or one of the heat shields is rubbing the driveshaft.

I did look under there yesterday and re-adjusted the furthest back heat shield cause I thought that too. I'll try and just remove it altogether and see if it stops. If it does fix it, Would it be safe to drive without the heat shield?

So it was the heat shield. My car is lowered and I must of bumped the exhaust backing out my driveway and it dented the heat shield a little causing a rub on the driveshaft.
