    Which transmission do I have?

    Hey guys

I picked up 325is a couple of months ago, and when I was buying it the buyer said it had an M3 transmission in it. I was a bit skeptical, and I'm not entirely sure of the validity of this. He said the person he bought it from put it in so he doesn't know much more than that. The transmission is on it's last leg so I need to look for a new transmission. If I already have an E36 transmission, then I will look for another E36 transmission, as I would already have the driveshaft in my car.

That brings me to my problem. How can I tell which transmission I have? Is there anything I can look at to know which transmission is in my car?

Crawl under the car with your phone and take pictures of all marks and tags you can find. Proceed with google.

I think what he means is that the 318 he pulled the transmission from had a cheesy m badge on the grill.

The m3 has a g265 transmission, which uses an aluminum cross member with for bolts to the body, while the 325 has a g260, which uses a stamped steel cross member with two bolts to the body.

I'll check for the cross member in my car. Is there a different cross member for the E36 M3 transmission as well?

The E36 M3 transmission would not sit at the proper angle and I really doubt you have one installed.

It's more likely that the guy was BS'ing you.
