    87 325e - synthetic transmission fluid question?

    Hello Everyone,

I'm brining my e30 into the shop on thursday and going to have them replace the transmission and differential fluids.

The car has 212K miles and the transmission is a little vague and notchy.
I may have them do the bushings, etc. - but am having all fluids done as I just aquired the car and the history is questionable.

Can anyone recommend what I should be asking for for the transmission and differential? I'm in New England, if the temp makes any difference. It's a 5 speed.

I've read about synthetic fluid, etc. But would love to hear another opinion. The car is stock, and not driven hard - just a pleasure cruiser.

Redline MT-90 or MTL is what most people run. I'm replacing mine this week as well.

The 325e has three different types of trans, green label, red label, and no label. They all came with different fluids from the factory. Sticker is on the trans driver side.

I'm about to do the same thing and hit the same question as you - what to put in.

After some research, I ended up buying RedLine for both the trans and the diff from amazon.com. Hopefully will put it in this week

        trans: http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?product=50204
        diff: http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?product=57904

X2 on the Redline. I've been using Mt-90 in my tranny for two years, and the 75w90NS in my diff (just a note, the NS is ONLY for open diff cars. If you have an LSD use the regular 75w90).

When I changed my diff oil last summer when I did the seals, the oil looked like it did from the bottle.

I just did the tranny today, but I didn't get a chance to catch the oil in something and examine it, but looked decent.

And since they are both synthetic, you can definitely run them longer than 30K miles. I went to around 100K KM. on both.
