can my clutch just die out of nowhere? not engaging the gears but I can shift in

    so here is the background:

my e30 drives amazing I've never grind(ed?) or (ground?) a gear, clutch has never slipped, and the transmission has never made any noise that would indicate wear.

    about the car:

    88 e30 325, 230,xxx miles
    odometer still works
    a/c heat work
P/O cared for the car and maintained it
    after purchasing the car
    full 325i head swap
    19lb injectors
327i sssquid chip for 19lb injectors

events leading up to the issue:

    I purchased a 3.73 lsd to replace the stock 2.93 o/d
installed it on the car with little to no hassle.
After installing the differential I started the car and heard a rumbling noise coming from the area under the center of the car( it stopped when i pressed in the clutch). Thought well thats kind of weird but its getting dark ill handle it tomorrow. needed to reverse the car maybe 2 feet to have it off the side walk and in my driveway. when I attempted to reverse the car( I Know dumb idea) i heard a pop and then nothing. clutch pedal still has the same travel nothing different in feel.

    symptoms:
    Car starts fine
I can shift into any gear with the car off
I can shift into any gear with the car on
the car does not move when giving it gas clutch smell happens
light rumble almost like if the driveline is knuckling? if that makes sense
car does not change idle when releasing the clutch pedal.

hope you guys can help me.
