    Using an E46 SMG 420G with an S52 E30

    Hey guys;

    There's an SMG E46 M3 trans for sale local to me for $800. I don't want an SMG transmission, but I hear that they are basically manuals with some added hydraulics and electrical.

    Worth the conversion, or should I just go with a ZF320? Or even just the G260...

    What's the rest of the drivetrain? Go 6spd manual if you can.
    Drive it hard. Maintain it well.

      For anyone in the future wondering, yes you can modify the bellhousing to be a manual transmission.

      Here's some info.

          Maybe. I dunno if a 6 speed is worth what seems to be a Fuckton™ of work.

          Surely a ZF320 will suffice...

            do you really need gear 6? its pretty chill for a long distance cruise but otherwise you don't really use it around town

              Looks like converting the bell housing will cost as much as just buying the 6MT to begin with.

              Is it worth it? IDK are any mods worthwhile? I'd love a 6 speed, nothing beats the feeling of having the right gear for a corner and still being able to cruise on the highway.

                Yeh, I don't do much cruising. But those few times when I do, would I want to be able to cruise?

                I can get a SMG 420G for $800.
                Machining the bellhousing: ~$300.
                Parts from BMW: $100
                Time investment: ???

                6MT 420G: ~$1800
