damn this damn rattling noise to hell

hows it goin people, alright i have the wonderful input shaft bearing rattle ie rattles until i get clutch past friction point. and i think its starting to get worse cause i can here what i believe to be it while driving when before i could just here it when i was stopped. my question for you the e30 public is how can i fixe this. is it something i could do on my own.

i know id have to drop the tranny so id probly do a high perf clutch and lighten the flywheel at the same time but is it possible to replace that bearing, and with simple tools?

The noises you hear when stopped probably aren't input shaft bearing noises. What you are hearing is regular old Getrag gear noise rattle. This is made more noticable when the car is warmed up and can be even worse if ATF is used in the gearbox.

You can try using a heavier weight gearbox oil. Redline can fix noises like this.

ok well thats good to know, last time the fluid was changed someone else did it so i dont know whats in there, what would you recommend, and do you think this is what im hearing when driving

i should add the noise when driving comes mainly around 3k+ rpm and its more noticeable the faster i go, but it is not extremely loud.

Hmmm, my getrag rattle is only audible at idle.

One thing I learned, the bad way, is that when the layshaft bearing noise gets louder it means you should check your transmission oil level. And if in doubt, drain, measure and refill. I checked regularly because of obvious seepage, but was misled by residual oil around the fill hole when the transmission was mostly empty.

I don't know why anyone would not have redline in their car these days. Its like smoking, everyone knows it kills you. But people still do it, I guess there are always gonna be dumb people
