Sloppy Automatic Shifter? WTH ? HELPPPP

My automatic gearbox shifter for my 89 325i is VERY loose when in gear. The lever works and it locks where it should but the shifter itself is moves freely up and down and is not tight. Any ideas on what it may be?

There is a tiny screw that goes into the shift lever/handle and screws the locking mechanism in place. Maybe you are missing the screw. Be careful if you decide to remove the handle, getting the shifter and the plastic locking mechanism to align and function properly is a pain.
