Hard to shift into 5th gear, linkage or transmission?

During my last track day I had an issue where if felt like there was a brick wall between the shifter and 5th gear. I didn't grind the gears, it didn't pop out, it just wouldn't even pretend to go in. I relaxed*, and gently tried again, no dice. Nothing is new with the car, I'm used to driving and shifting at speed. It happened a few more times that day, but most times I could get it in.

Back in the paddock I rowed the gears a few times and 5th gear felt like it was "tricky" to get into, or was experiencing more resistance, but I could do it.

I can (and will) change my transmission fluid before my text track day, but only if people tell me it's not likely to be a transmission problem. Would low fluid or bad/bent linkage cause this? Or is a different gear more likely to fall prey to these problems before 5th gear is?

I'm really just looking for "best guess" here. I'll carve out time and budget for a transmission, but not if I don't have to.

*as relaxed as one can be while drifting at 100mph and an E36 M3 closing fast.
