    Rear End Clunk

    hey,

want to run this past everyone. I have some rear end clunking going on and it seems to be getting worse.

I only hear it very occasionally when i let the clutch out. It really appears when the car is in gear and moving at a slow rate of speed. Say the rpms are under 1.3k car is in gear, you can feel the momentum of the engine/drivetrain shifting from forward then back (if that makes any sense) and i get fairly loud clunk at this point. Clunk back and forth the car freaking rocking with it (i still have the stock suspension). With some careful foot work you will seldom hear this clunk, usually letting out the clutch when the engine rpms are approaching 1.5k on deceleration. I recently let a unfamiliar driver take the wheel and omg it was scary, lots of this going on at low speeds,

The clunk is not present on hard acceleration and the driveline feels tight when moving. looking for any help here. I am thinking about dropping the subframe, but would be nice to hear from the more experienced on the matter.

car is a 325i with lsd

I have the same problem and I replaced quite a bit of things except my subframe bushings, which I'm getting done within the month.
I've narrowed it down to my old subframe bushings causing the subframe itself to move around.
When ever my car spins wheel in any gear, it will also wheel hop (while in motion) and shake the subframe around. My e30 specialist mechanic also confirmed this with me after going for a ride-along.

My diff bushing while old and worn is still in one piece and seems solid. I guess it's time to bite the bullet and pull the subframe. Doesn't seem too bad of a procedure. I'm curious how your's turns out.

I'll update this thread if I get mine done before you and note if the clunk goes away.

A clunk noise I thought was from the rear end turned out to b from bolt holes in the transmission output flange had gone from circles to ovals. I had a lot of vibration too though.
