    Trouble separating driveshaft

I'm trying to separate the driveshaft on my 318is and I can't get the collar nut to budge at all. Am I supposed to loosen it toward the splines? Are they always really stubborn?

It does loosen towards the splines, away from the rear half of the driveshaft. If you are standing at the transmission end, looking down towards the differential end, it will loosen by spinning it counter clockwise.

I usually have to use a couple pipe wrenches if it hasn't been loosened lately. One around the driveshaft to keep it from spinning, and one around the collar nut.

If you only have one pipe wrench, gingerly stick a pry bar in between the middle u-joint and shaft body to keep it from spinning for leverage.

If you don't have any pipe wrenches, go buy one.
