Not another old diff question...Well maybe...

I haven't had this car long but out of curiosity from reading many post here and asking friends a lot questions..

Anyway, I had to find out what was in my car. So I crawled under it..

All that I have read on this forum I have not heard mention of the gear ratios in my car..
The tag says S2.79 ?? I know the "S" is limited slip, but 2.79 ??
I thought the lowest ratio was 2.91?

Would this be original to my car?
    1985 - 325e

I have a pic of the tag I'll try to post later if needed...

You thought wrong. And it could be original.

It looks to be original, I just had not seen the numbers before..

      I guess I could get some decent + changes with a 3.25 or 3.73 ???

early ('84-85) 325e's had 2.79 diffs- some LSD as you have found. Later ('85-up) 325e's had 2.93 diffs.

As has been mentioned, I would go with a 3.25 ratio for a good improvement in acceleration, but without losing too much top end- or revving the piss out of the car at highway speeds.

If you decide to do the swap- you'll find 3.25 ratio diffs in many E28 5 series cars- you'll have to confirm that it's LSD though as they seem to be hit and miss in those cars. I might know someone who would buy your 279LSD if you want to sell it- lemme know.

My 84 came with a 2.93 open. I'm upgrading to a 2.93 LSD for my engine swap though.

I would sell or trade for a 3.25lsd if anyone is interested. Mine is in very good condition.. I'll even clean the outside before it is shipped..

I am putting a 323I euro head on very soon and would really like to swap the diffy as well.. I am pulling the rear subframe out to replace bushings, It would be a great time to do it..
