    5 speed swap... whining noise?

Hey, I just finished my 5 speed swap last night and everything started up great. The car drives good, no vibrations. Once I got the exhaust on I noticed that there is a speed dependent whining noise that raises in pitch/intensity as the speed increases. The fastest I've gotten up to is 60 and the noise gets so high pitched that i'm scared to go any faster. Doesn't matter what gear I'm in, although it seems to become more intense when I'm stepping on the gas.

Anyone have any thoughts as to what this noise might be coming from? After all that work I really don't feel like pulling it apart again...

If you push the clutch pedal in, does the noise stop? Did you install the pilot bearing, the one that the transmission input shaft's nose sits in?

If it's speed dependant then it's either driveshaft (or driveshaft parts) or differential.

It shouldn't matter if you press the clutch in as the driveshaft is still spinning when the rear wheels are turning.

Correct. When I push the clutch in the noise is still there. And yes I installed a new pilot bearing.

Could this be the CSB? I thought when those went bad they vibrated... there is no noticable vibration from this noise.

Quite possibly. I have similar sounding buzzing sound from my centre bearing at about 100-120 KPH after replacing it.

I need to take a look at it. You did preload the bearing right?

I'm not quite sure what this means. I had my friend who is a mechanic help install the pilot bearing and clutch assembly because I didn't want to mess it up. Hes done clutches many times so I'm assuming he did it right. I'll ask him about it.

The mounting holes for the center bearing support are slotted, so you can slide it forward to preload the bearing.

Ahh. No I did not do that. I just installed it based on the washer marks from the previous car it was on. Do you want to slide the CSB all the way towards the front of the car, or the rear?

Sounds like your diff. Did you change diffs during the swap?

Yeah I did. Before I installed it I opened it up and it looked great. I filled it with Redline 75w90 gear oil as well... I'm hoping its not the diff...

well, My Diff is showing the same signs you are describing. Especially on the interstate. You can get it to stop by taking your foot off the gas. And then it resumes as soon as you hit the gas.

Why would the diff not make noise with your foot off the gas? Woulden't it make the noise based on the speed of the wheels? Just wondering why the gas has to be pressed for the noise. Maybe more load?

i would imagine its more strain and torque on the bearings, But i have no idea
