Stupid Getrag Querstions

I had the car up on a lift today and tried to replace the trans oil with Redline 75W.

What kind of tool do I need to remove the plug, and how the hell do you get the 75W into that hole?

I have the appropriate size allen head, but it's too fat to fit.

I made a tool out of some 17mm nuts/bolts which fitted into the hole then used a spanne on it. As foir getting the fluid in, most of the smaller containers that the oil comes in have a clear plastic hose that pulls out of the lid. Squeeze the bottle and the oil flows out.

I tried the bolt method, but I didn't have any 17mm nuts. I'll round some up and make something that will work.

Buy a 17mm allen key. Cut off a 15mm or so slice. Weld it into a 17mm wrench.

even easier way to fill the trans is to go to autozone/checker or what ever and get a suction gun and a legnth of hose. unscrew top of gun , fill with ATF or GEAR OIL (they hold about a quart), put hose deep inside trans, push out fluid, repeat as needed until full, replace plug, drive car,. minimal mess/waste.
gun costs around $10-$15

Matt - that's a great idea. IIRC, I already have a 17mm allen lying around. I have 5 or 6 17mm wrenches, too.

All I need now is a $500 welder.

mail me your wrench and allen and i'll weld it for free (you pay postage both ways) with my $2000 matco/century/hobart welder. work buys my wire and gas=no cost to me

Thanks for the offer, but I have access to local welders. There will be very little lateral load on the tool, so I may try to braze it with my old school torch.

You dont even need to weld it... you can just shove the allen key piece in the hole and turn it with the wrench. The welding is just so it stays together.

for these that are tool junkies like myself......snap-on offers a "oil change" wrench for just about every foreign car. shallow offset allen on one side "tranny/diff service" and approperate box end on the otherside also offset. i'll post the pn on monday when i can look in my box for anyone interested.

BRAZE=ewwwwwww at least get some steel rod and raise you welding skills, even if it doesn't need that kind of stregnth, and it looks much cooler than braze.

That's what I did.

It's crazy how much difference fresh fluids make. The car rattled like a can full of ball bearings before I replaced the trans fluid. I went ahead and replaced the diff fluid too, and used Redline 75/90 front and rear. The diff looked fairly fresh, but the trans fluid looked like a combination of Dextron and horse piss. Came out looking like 5 weight.

affe - have you seen my welding? It doesn't matter what I use. It always looks like ass.

actually if you can get your gas welding down (not brazing) you will have a major leg up on TIG welding (same prinicipals just with better heat control)...that is if you wanted to get you welding skills improved.
