88 auto transmission question

Hey guys first post here! Just bought a 88 325i auto convertible for $1100 and had the transmission not want to select any gear once it got hot in traffic, got it towed home. Since then I've changed the fluid/filter and cleaned the pan. I used dextron 4 fluid according to other fourms. It hasn't missed any gears or slip anymore but seems to shift very early around 2000rpm even under full throttle while in D. I've been using the manual selector to pass and get going if i need too and shifts fairly hard/quick. Is there any way to change the shift points to shift later while in D via a valve or switch? Also I've put about 3.5 quarts of fluid in for it to show correctly on the dipstick. Any help would be appreciated!

How did the fluid look when you emptied it? Black or brownish and not red/orange. If the fluid hasn't been changed for more than 100,000 miles, a lot of ppl advise to avoid changing the fluid.

Things that could be causing this:

Changing tranny fluid that hasn't been changed for a while

Throttle Cable

Transmission Governor

Transmission Shift Valves

It was pretty bad. Lots of sediment. Problem was the transmission wasn't selecting ANY gears once it got warm.. soo i changed it and just having problems in D shifting early.. if you shift manually 1-3 the car runs fine. [emoji848] I'm wondering if I changed fluid again if it would help? I'm guessing maybe one of the valves is blocked with sediment but who knows. I'm no tranny expert.

Mine tends to shift early and fairly quickly/hard when partial throttle, but if I go WOT, it'll wind out all the way to like 6500. Have you tried givin the beans?

Yeah I have.. no kickdown. [emoji849] gonna try to readjust the cable this weekend. Will let yall know how it goes.

The first time I ever drove an E30 was before we purchased the car itself. I noticed it has a LOT of resistance and didn't wanna downshift but I chalked it up to 33yr old car things. I've since adjusted the throttle cable to remove the slack, the resistance remains, but it does downshift easier. I still don't understand why it's sooo anemic off the line unless I completely stand on the gas though, but once I do, it finally feels as fast I'd imagine an IS swapped car should. Now I just need to figure out why the throttle has so much resistance vs being butter smooth in our newer BMW's.
