    SSK too notchy

    I need help to get the notchy feeling out of my tranny. The car has an ebay Short shifter. It is not the shortest throw ever but engaging 2nd and 1st is very hard some times!! I have brand new valvoline gear oil 75w-90. 3rd and 4th feel notchy but good!!

    Do I need to bend the selector rod to ge it straight?

    get a oem z3 or z4 shift lever. That will fix it ;)

      it usually take a weeks worth of driving to break-in a shifter ebay or OEM.

        I had an ebay shifter. It was short but was really notchy. It came with a lot of slop too in the pivot assembly. I just got a new B&M shifter and its awsome. Its a little less short but is so much more precise and has barely any notchiness Its an awsome shifter. Changed the whole feeling of shifting

          My Z4 shifter broke-in after a few weeks of street driving. It was VERY notchy. Don't worry too much, it will go away.

            same here.. also, i heard a heavier shift knob will help smooth it out. havent tried it yet though

              The notchy shifting is due to the decreased amount of leverage pushing the transmission into gear.

              The only thing that will change is the amount of wear on all of the bushings, but that will just make the shifting sloppy and still notchy.

                I don't know how it works, but it does "break-in" it doesn't get any sloppier, just less notchy.

                  Why wouldn't you want a notchy shifter is my question. IMO, the notchier the better.

                    WTF actually happens when it "breaks in"? I'm more apt to believe that we all just get used to how notchy it is. I have the Z4 3.0 and it's notchy as hell. Just the same as it's been since day once. I'm just really used to it now... every other manual feels like I'm rowing a boat.


                    To the first poster - try bleeding your clutch to get rid of some of the harshness/notchiness... your slave may be going out.
