Searched with no results. Dog leg tranny Q's

I couldnt find anything using the search toolbar. But i have a line on a rusty 323i with 80k km's. I was wondering what the huge hype over a dog leg tranny is? If someone could tell me why they are better i would really appreciate it. And does the 323i head give a higher compression ratio than 885? Looking at stroking my motor over winter, and i thought the 323 head would be a better option.

It's called a 'dog-leg' because of the gear pattern. They're generally used for racing (which makes me curious as to why a 323 would have one) with 1st gear down and to the left. They're designed to have the throw from 2nd to 3rd shorter (in time) because when you're racing you don't downshift into 1st gear.

The 323 was very commonly raced in the early 80s before the M3. They both have a 2.3L displacement. Get it? Possibly a rule for displacement

        <<< shift pattern

the getrag 245 is close ratio (some, not all) and it was lighter compared with the 325i stock getrag 260

beats me why it was in 323i's..... not as strong as the 260 though

^ Its not the first time I've heard the 260s are better than the 245s. Why is that? I mean I'd figure the tranny based on racing would be able to take more abuse.

On CR `trannys, there is less drop in rpm when shifting at higher rpm. IIRC the 245 was a carryover from the E21 days.
