CV axle installation ?

Our local B dub club had a project day meet and I have had a clunk in the back of the car since I did the swap, so I decided I would do the axle on the side that was clunkin. After removing the wheel I noticed that since I had the exhaust done the muffler is rubbing the shock, that's the clunk. Ok great something I don't have to do. Well the boot was shot and it felt like it was lackin the packin so I figured I would change it out. After I got off the nut I took a deep 13mm impact socket and tapped it out. Simple enough, I go to put the new one in and it would only go in about a half inch.... so I got a wire brush and hit the inside splines and then took some excess packing lube and greased it up along with the axle thinkin that would make this go a little smoother,wrong. I had to tap this thing in with a 3lb hammer while spinning it to get it even. In the process I damaged the thin stamped sheet metal that attaches the boot to the stub axle piece.


So there has to be a better way to do this. Ideas?

I am about to replace both of these in a week and wanted to get some pointers from the vets. I fubared the one pretty good with a hammer last time so is there a tool or some way to press these in?

Last time I had to reinstall a half shaft I used a hammer tapping the inner most flange w/ no damage. But the hammer method is the only way I know good luck to ya. ( I have to replace mine in the e30 vert' ASAP too, good thing for the e34)

Hammer and a block of wood until you can get the nut back on the shaft end and pull it through with the impact gun.

Ah fuck I was afraid of that. I had to beat this thing with a BFH to get it in there. I am going to wire brush the inside of the the hub like crazy when I do this next.

Old thread, but here's what I did when I had that problem. I took a file to all the splines on the new axle. The reman had some sort of coating on the splines and it had to be filed off. A wire brush was not going to cut it. It took a little elbow grease to do all the splines, but it slid right on once I was done. You don't need to file much, just until the coating comes off. A 3-sided file works the best.
