i'm in the process of putting my engine/tranny back in the car and i have the mounts bolted to the tranny, but where the mounts connect to the car i can't get them tight. the studs that hang down aren't held down in the car so they actually spin when i try to put the nut on. it's very frustrating! anyone have any tips for dealing with this?

Sounds like the mounts are old and failing. They aren't expensive and it doesn't make sense to me to re-use the motor and transmission mounts unless they were recently replaced. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Do you mean the nuts on the mount, or the where the support bracket mounts to the car?
The connection to the body is with square-headed bolts that slide into the body slots. Remove them by sliding them to the wide end of the slot and inspect their heads. But at $4 each you'll probably decide to not replace them with new ones.Comment

He is talking about the bolts that slide in the rails on the body. Put a screwdriver/prybar in between the trans brace and the body and pry down once you have the nut started. Then tighten the nut while prying down with the screwdriver. That should keep enough tension on that bolt so you can tighten it all the way.
