    You have three options.

    1) put up with it. It will probably get worse.

    2) fix it. you'll need a new 1-2 selector fork atleast. Oh, and you need to know how a manual trans comes apart and goes back together.

    3) Swap in another trans.

Wonderful... I called the local BMW dealer and they told me that it'd be $130 to get a new selector fork. Is it damn near impossible to replace or is it just kinda hard? 'Cause if I can do it, I'm gonna. I'm just worried that if I do get a used tranny, it'll be in the same condition as the current one.

Don't bother trying to fix it. You can get a new trans for not a lot more than $130.

Really? I've only seen them for upwards of $300. If you know where I can find one for less than $200, please let me know. Otherwise it's a new synchro (just for insurance) and selector fork for $250. And a lot of time not driving... that saddens me...

You really have no idea what you're getting into inside the transmission, do you?

Here is a taste of what the internals look like:

If you haven't done transmission work before, I don't suggest it. It's not as simple as pulling it apart, changing the part out and putting it back together. There are tolerances that need to be checked, certain pieces HAVE to be replaced if taken apart, etc... Not to mention you don't know for sure that the problem is a selector fork.

Yeah, I don't even like to rebuild trannies and I work on cars for a living. It's a pain in the butt to do it right and it's tedious work. All that said, hate to say it Derek but you're due for a new unit.

Wanna help install it? I'm sure we could knock it out in a day. I can talk to Rich and we could head out to the harbor and use his lift.

I guess we should start making a checklist of things to buy. I'm thinking the 1st thing on the list should be a tranny. :D Calling Joe Funk to the thread

Sure, I HATE pulling trannies out of these cars just because of the bell housing bolts. Then again it could be a lot worse. I'll drag my special toys along and we should have it knocked out in no time.

Yep, that looks like just what I expected it to look like. I do know that it's not as simple as take it apart and put it back together and I'm not too worried. I've got the time and the resources to do the job. I wouldn't suggest the idea if I didn't know what I was getting into. We'll see what happens...
