    difficult downshifting

It's very difficult to get the lever into gear when shifting from 3rd to 2nd and from 2nd to 1st. Is this normal or a sign of worn synchros? It helps if I rev-match, but it is still far more difficult than the 5-4 shift or the 4-3 shift.

my volvo does that when i try to shift quickly, try slowing down your shifts, should help. I think it has to do with worn synchros, I changed my tranny fluid with the 20$/liter volvo synthetic stuff and it didn't help at all.

try double clutching *and* rev matching... should have no problemos... I suppose take a peek at your shifter linkage, make sure nothing is binding.

The only downshift I have difficulty with is 2nd to 1st, and no one should really need to downshift to 1st anyway. Unless you're goofing off approaching a red light.
