    Short Shifter questions

hey guys i was thinking about putting a short shifter on my car. Right now its in need of a bushing kit. I see the ebay shifters marketed at like 30 bucks. Like all of those ebay products, my guess is that its junk and wont work. Theres on on there for 125 also. more money? maybe a fit. any one with experience on this? fill me in on how good it is?
    thanks. w00t its technically friday!

you should elaborate and saying that different bmw models have shorter rods and putting one in an E30 makes an improvement.

and the OP should have searched. :)

I believe the z4 shifter is shorter, but more people go with the 1.9 z3 shirter *shrugs*

            *Shorter not shirter, lol

If lucky, the E36 will die peacefully, in its natural habitat, and be given the prestigious honor of donating its parts to an E30

Anything that is OEM you can order from the dealership.

In the thread I posted in my previous post...with the shark...you will find the part numbers you need for whichever shifter you decide on.

You can also order from BMA Parts, or a few other places I can't remember.

I'm running the z4 shifter, just a little heads up, remove that vibration dampiner thing at the front of the driveshaft (if yours has one)

Would I have to do this with the Z3 1.9 also?

i just did the Z3 1.9 swap for my 325is. yes, it will hit the Vibration Damper so you will need to either remove the Vib Damper or bend the selector rod.

At first i was going to remove the vib damper, but to do that you must: remove exhaust, remove heat shields, disengage guibo, remove driveshaft. too much work for me, although if you do all that it will make the shifter/bushing change much easier (you don't need to reach around the driveshaft to access the PITA clip).

so instead i bent the selector rod. I've seen pics about doing this by using a vise and 3 sockets...etc...but since i didn't have that stuff, i just eyeballed how much i need to bend, and then placed the selector rod over a metal bar (the old shifter, actually) and whacked on one end with a hammer. the selector rod is already notched in the place it needs to bend, you just have to increase that bend. very easy, once you get the selector rod out of the car.

GET THE DELRIN BUSHINGS (Ireleand Engineering, $10) and swap those in.

so, after all that, i finally finished my replacement, and it's 1000% better. shifts are very short, they "click" into place (not notchy) and the lever is much more rigid (pretty much all the play from the alum shift carrier is gone).

go look at the monster thread in the DIY forum for the full info.
